Comments Being Solicited on Derogation Applications Until September 15, 2007

On May 18, 2007 FSC Policy and Standards Unit (PSU) revised the list of highly hazardous pesticides as well as the derogation application process. Now that the list of new chemicals is finalized, numerous U.S. certificate holders are applying for temporary derogations to continue to use the chemicals that were added onto that prohibited list. Certificate holders are working toward an October 1 deadline for submittal of the completed applications to FSC International.

In order to provide stakeholders with at least a 45-day comment period, stakeholder consultation is being carried out in two phases. This first phase provided stakeholders with a list of the pesticides that derogations are being sought for, see below. We are now beginning Phase II to solicit feedback on the detailed applications that explain the justification/demonstrated need, safeguards applied during use, and programs to develop alternatives for these pesticides.

Stakeholders will have until September 15th to offer comments on the draft applications. Please send comments to: ndaly@fscus.org

Following are the 8 pesticides requiring derogations and the respective regions:

Pesticide chemical name: hexazinone
Use type: herbicide
FSC US Regions: All
