FSC Tags and Packaging Make Holiday Shopping Fun |
|
In recent months, several companies have made significant moves toward FSC-certified garment tags and packaging, which, when viewed together, make this year's holiday shopping "greener" than ever. For several months now, GAP, Old Navy and Banana Republic have been using FSC-certified hang tags, prominently featuring the FSC label, on their garments. The hang tags are sold to the retailers by FSC-certified printers, a stellar example of FSC Chain of Custody certification in action. Other retailers are also expressing interest in using FSC-certified and -labeled hang tags in future. On December 2, PAK 2000, a leading supplier of paper bags and packaging products to fashion brands such as Versace, Prada, Valentino and J. Crew, announced that it will develop and implement a "leadership" paper policy in the first quarter of 2010. In addition to a strong preference for FSC and recycled products, PAK 2000 has pledged to phase out all fiber from controversial sources and High Conservation Value Forests within 180 days. On November 3, Gucci announced its intent to source only FSC-certified or recycled products by December 2010 for all paper categories — from copy paper to shopping bags — as well as reducing the amount of paper the company uses and eliminating fiber from High Conservation Value Forests and controversial sources. Gucci is the latest in a group of fashion companies (along with PAK 2000) that are working with the Rainforest Action Network, a U.S.-based environmental NGO and FSC member, to ensure that their packaging, paper use and environmental footprint are environmentally and socially responsible. Tiffany & Co. was the first fashion brand to switch all of its paper to FSC-certified paper, including its iconic sky-blue shopping bags.
