FSC Membership

FSC International is an association of voting members. Members have the highest authority in formal decisions taken by FSC. To ensure FSC's independence and adherence to its objectives, it is essential that members support FSC's principles and aims. So though the FSC Statutes lay down strict conditions for all applicants, these rules are not intended to be a barrier to genuine supporters.

FSC-U.S. members are the members of the FSC-International who reside in the United States. Like membership in FSC-International, membership in the FSC-U.S. allows one to vote for members of our Board of Directors and to vote on major policy matters that face the Forest Stewardship Council in the United States.

For voting purposes, FSC membership is divided into three chambers: Economic, Social, and Environmental

  • Social Chamber: Intended for indigenous organizations and social movements that have an active interest in environmentally viable forest stewardship.
  • Environmental Chamber: Limited to non-profit, non-governmental organizations with a demonstrated commitment to environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forest stewardship.

Research, academic, technical institutions, and individuals are eligible to become members. The FSC Board will determine their designation to a particular chamber. Government organizations are not eligible to become members. (The governing board of FSC member organizations must also be independent of government organizations.)
