2005 Honorable Mention: The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Headquarters

Why FSC Was Important to This Project

Less is Moore. The reuse of a historic building in the Presidio, coupled with repurposing salvaged steel, brick, barn wood and wind fallen trees as interior elements, puts less strain on declining natural resources, and gives the workspace an artful and unique character. Keeping built and finished elements to a minimum, using local and regional resources, and evaluating all aspects of a product’s lifecycle helped the Foundation to “walk the talk” in creating positive outcomes for future generations. The standards set up by the Forest Stewardship Council were aligned with the environmental and social values of the Moore Foundation, and were an obvious choice when selecting new wood products.

This project serves as an example of how interior elements, when evaluated from a true environmental lifecycle perspective, while giving social and economic issues consideration, can both strengthen the values of an organization and create a great place to work and thrive.

Use of FSC-certified Wood

New wood was used only in millwork and furniture items. 100% of all veneer was FSC certified. In the custom workstations, all particleboard substrate and solid wood components were FSC-certified. Products using certified wood included: custom bookshelves in the veranda, reception desk, coat closet and touchdown stations, garden level pantry millwork, Tokonoma wall, workstations and conference tables.

The two story FSC-certified wood “Tokonoma Wall” (pictured above) that connects the first floor and garden level community spaces, holds objects collected from different regions of the world that the foundation reaches out to, and expresses the mission of the organization.
