2005 Entry: The Hanvey Residence

Why FSC Was Important to This Project

From an unremarkable renovation requirement—more space for a growing family—sprang an ambitious objective: to demonstrate how to make cutting-edge environmental performance beautiful and desirable while working within a very conventional budget. FSC-certified products were central to the sustainability objectives of the project. Because wood framing and finishing are the “vernacular” of southwestern British Columbia, the use of sustainable wood was an obvious way to optimize the greening of the renovation.

Project Name: The Hanvey Residence
Location: North Vancouver, BC
Building Type: Private Residence
Square Footage: 1621
Owner: Kevin Hanvey & Helen Goodland
Architect: Brantwood Design

Use of FSC-certified Wood

FSC-certified wood products used for this project included dimensional framing lumber, exterior plywood sheathing, and kitchen and bathroom cabinets. FSCcertified products represented 59% (by cost) of all wood products used for the project.

At the time of renovation, there was no available supplier of FSC-certified framing lumber in the local area. A local lumber co-op, however, was able to bring in lumber from California. Although the owners struggled with the ethical decision of transporting lumber from that distance and the associated emissions that would be created, they eventually decided that it would be worth it and a great opportunity to use the project as a demonstration of FSC-certified products in this large building market. Since completion of the project, FSC-certified dimensional framing lumber is now readily available in the area from a local source.

The owners selected an FSC-certified, quarter sawn maple as the veneer for the kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
